At the foot of Mount Olympus, located directly on the sea, is the village of Leptokarya. More specifically, the new Leptokarya. Until the 1950s the inhabitants of the village lived about four kilometers further west in the mountains. When the earth began to slip, the inhabitants moved down to the sea. The new village was built in the shape of a chessboard, each family received a plot of approximately 400 m².
However, for some years now, the old sites in the mountain are increasingly being rebuilt and partly permanently inhabited. The main source of income is tourism. There are plenty of hotels and tavernas on several kilometers of beach. In the second and third row you can also find cheap pensions. All in all, from the private accommodation to the 4-star hotel, everything the tourist needs for a relaxing holiday.
An attraction is the weekly market at tuesdays, where one can buy products of the region at a favorable price.
Also interesting is Livithra, according to Greek mythology the birthplace of Orpheus. Here, excavations have still been carried out. Really worth a visit is the Geological Museum . In which is informed about the origin of the Olympus and its geological composition.
